Definitions and caveats
- Source
- Reserve Bank of India, Bank-wise ATM/POS/Card Statistics, one Excel release per month. Every figure here is a bank's own monthly return to RBI, re-shaped but not adjusted.
- Payments and cash
- "Card payments" are transactions at PoS terminals plus online/e-commerce and other card-not-present transactions. "ATM cash" is cash withdrawn at ATMs with the card. Before March 2022 RBI reported only an "at PoS" and an "at ATM" split; from March 2022 the payments side is the sum of three published columns. Debit-card cash withdrawn at PoS (tiny) is excluded from both.
- Units
- Counts are in Indian notation: K = thousand, L = lakh (100,000), Cr = crore (10 million). Money is in ₹ crore; ₹1 L Cr = ₹1 lakh crore = ₹1 trillion. RBI's own unit changed from ₹ million to ₹ lakh (July 2019) to ₹ thousand (March 2022); all values are converted before display.
- Ticket sizes
- Monthly spend per card = card payments value ÷ cards outstanding. Average payment = payments value ÷ payment count. Average ATM withdrawal = ATM cash value ÷ ATM withdrawal count. All in rupees per transaction or per card per month.
- Market share
- Always a share of all banks in RBI's release for that month, even when a bank-type filter narrows which banks are listed. Colours stay attached to a bank while you change the window, month or Top N.
- Bank names
- RBI has spelt the same bank many different ways since 2011. Names are standardised to RBI's latest spelling, so mergers show as the surviving bank from the merger month and the absorbed banks simply end. Bank type follows RBI's own group headings, with IDBI Bank classed as private from its 2019 reclassification onward.
- Revisions
- RBI re-issues some months as "Revised", sometimes a year later. The data file is rebuilt from the latest release of every month whenever the updater runs.
- UPI
- The UPI section comes from NPCI's UPI Ecosystem Statistics tables, not from RBI. App shares use customer-initiated transactions as NPCI reports them per app; app names are standardised across NPCI's spelling changes. Remitter-bank shares come from NPCI's top-50 member table, so "Others" there is everything outside the top 50. NPCI revises the latest months, and the collector re-reads the last three months on every run. The state map uses NPCI's state-wise table (from April 2023); a large share of transactions carries no location and is left off the map, so state shares are of located transactions only. Boundaries: udit-001/india-maps-data, simplified.
